Introduction to the course


This course is aimed at those who wish to install, service, maintain, commission and decommission dry solid fuel appliances. It includes lining existing flues and external system chimneys,  The course is a pre-requisite for installers who wish to join the competent person’s scheme maintained by HETAS for the purpose of self certification of their installation.

Entry Requirements

  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence; or
  • Demonstrable and appropriate previous work experience, (minimum 3 installations signed off by Local Authority Building Control, HETAS Registered Engineer, or Surefire SF courses).
  • Or evidence of OFTEC 101/ 102.
  • Or evidence of Gas Safe Registration CCN1 and HTR1.
  • Or a registered member of GMCS, APICS, NACS or SweeSafe.

  • Principles of Combustion,
  • Causes of Incomplete Combustion & Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.
  • Appliance types, Operating Principles & Selection.
  • Legislation, Regulations & Industry guidance.
  • Flue system & Ventilation requirements for solid fuel appliances.
  • Flue & Chimney Inspection, testing and fault diagnosis.
  • Dry solid fuel appliance; Sizing, Selection, Installation, Commissioning & Decommissioning.
  • Dry solid fuel appliance service & maintenance.

How is the course assessed

Multiple choice and desk based activity question papers; open book examination 100% to pass. Two attempts must get 75% or more for second attempt. Practical assessment 100% to pass, two attempts must get 75% or more for second attempt.

What Next

Register your business with HETAS as an Approved Installer; following successful inspection from HETAS Inspector join the register of competent engineers with the authority to sign off your own installations with Building Control.
