Introduction to the Course
This course is specially designed for people wishing to become Install, Commission and Service Air Source Heat Pumps.
Entry Requirements
In order to access this course you must hold either:
- A nationally recognised qualification and/or registration in a trade associated with heating and/or plumbing and/or heat pump system design work (i.e. Heat Pump System Design Work – OFT21-504D) for a period of not less than 2 years. Evidence must be provided; OR,
- Provide written evidence to the Assessment Centre confirming that the candidate has ‘on the job’ heating installation and/or maintenance experience for a period of not less than two years, that would support their application for the range of assessments to be undertaken and evidence of ongoing continual professional development. Evidence must be provided to the Assessment Centre and must consist of a minimum of the name and address of the business providing the related experience and the types of related work undertaken.
And in addition to the above:
- Hold current and valid Water Regulations Certificate
- Hold current and valid Unvented Hot Water certificate
- Undertake heat pumps training at an OFTEC Approved Training Centre Prior to accessing the OFTEC assessments – we can offer this in advance of undertaking this course – additional information on costs/durations/content are available in the water section of our website
Course Content
Installation, Commissioning and Servicing of Air Source Heat Pumps (OFT21-504A) provides you a range of theory and practical training covering:
- Health and safety risks and safe systems of work associated with heat pump system installation work (non-refrigerant circuits)
- Health and safety risk of heat pump refrigerants
- Requirements of relevant regulations/standards relating to practical installations, testing and commissioning activities for heat pump work (non-refrigerant circuits
- Different types of low carbon central heating systems
- Factors to consider prior to the installation of low carbon central heating appliances i.e. purpose and operation of basic heat pump components
- Low carbon heating and hot water system installation i.e. pre-installation checks, protection, installation, commissioning, documentation, handover
- Principles of heat pump selection and system design that are common to all heat pumps i.e. cylinders, controls, coefficients, source temperatures, weather compensation, operation ad efficiency
- Industry requirements for testing – i.e. soundness, pipework
- Flushing requirements and system additives
- Operational checks on system, components and controls i.e. temperature, flow rate, pressure, expansion vessels, mechanical controls, electrical controls and sensors, function, system balancing
- Routine service and maintenance
As you can see this course contains several modules and therefore training takes a number of days to complete. You must also allow time to undertake and successfully pass the associated theory and practical assessments.

The candidate will undertake and be required to pass a range of theory and practical assessments in order to gain certification of this course.
